For this project, Norton Builders worked closely with the homeowners to create a traditional family abode with personality. Upon requesting a single-storey build, the clients were looking to achieve a warm and charming feel throughout the home to suit its Bayside surroundings. They also wanted to emphasise a relaxed lifestyle, as well as create a private study area that featured views of the garden to enjoy when working from home.
Situated on a corner block, the team maximised the available space by positioning the garage away from the front elevation. This allowed for a separate entrance to be created for the family’s use. Showcasing James Hardie Linea weatherboards, high-quality Dulux paints, a COLORBOND roof, bay windows and a generous verandah, the façade has a simplistic yet inspiring street presence.
As a homage to the classic style of the property, stained glass windows from the original build were refurbished and incorporated into the front door design, and continue to be used throughout the interior for visual cohesion.
Upon entry, you are welcomed into the formal sitting room, which features a gas-log fire and mantel, as well as floorto- ceiling shelving and shaker-panel cabinetry. A wide hallway leads you to the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. Victorian-ash timber flooring exudes sophistication, while bi-fold doors connect the indoor and outdoor areas. The north-facing merbau deck area, featuring a retractable vergola, is the ideal spot to entertain guests year-round.
The home was awarded a six-star energy rating for its environmentally friendly elements, including double-gazed windows, LED downlights, solar heating, and hydronic heating.
Norton Builders was established in 1958 by brothers Ron and John Norton, who built the company’s first home in Parkdale. In 1985, second-generation builder David Norton took over the business, and to this day, he and his team continue to design and construct outstanding homes. More than 1500 projects have been successfully completed under Norton Builders’ name since its inception.
Specialising in custom-designed homes that meet its clients’ individual needs, the team is heavily involved throughout the entire design and construction process, and pride themselves on cultivating a strong customer rapport.
Norton Builders works primarily in Melbourne’s bayside and metropolitan areas, and also builds elegant homes across the Mornington Peninsula. The team constructs a maximum of 28 homes annually, taking time to ensure every project is of an exceptionally high standard.
As a prime example of this dedication to quality, the company won the Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) Custom Home Design accolade in the $500,000–$700,000 category in 2015, and was a finalist in 2012, 2014 and 2015 for the Custom Home Design $500,000–$700,000, Custom Built Home up to $500,000 and Custom Home Design $350,000–500,000 awards respectively. Norton Builders was also a runner up in 2013 for the Townhouse Development $750,000–$1 million category.
