McLauchlan Building Designers Project 3

Located in Malvern’s exclusive Hedgely Dene enclave, this home, designed by McLauchlan Building Designers and built by Guy Cole of Eastside Residential, epitomises contemporary elegance and showcases numerous ingenious design features.

Thoughtful use of space has resulted in a range of living zones for the family to enjoy, while the outdoor kitchen and dining area acts as a transition between the ground-floor family and dining areas and steps down to the rear lawn and garden.

The use of space gives the home a sense of comfort – all rooms have space to move without being excessive – and, in accordance with fundamental feng shui principles, the home features a stunning family living area.

The two-storey abode was designed for a young family with two or three children. The combination of sunlight into the house and shade where it’s needed ensures year-round comfort for the occupants.

The kitchen, which is a feature of the home, offers the family chef an expansive working pantry. A bench-to-cabinet window adds interest, light and an increased sense of space to the working area. Double bi-fold doors from the kitchen allow for effortless access to the alfresco area, making outdoor dining a breeze.

The task of developing a site in Hedgely Dene is no mean feat, and McLauchlan Building Designers had to not only contend with strict council planning applications, but also prepare for the possibility of objections to the plans by residents of neighbouring and nearby properties who are keen to maintain the stately area’s beautiful architecture and stunning tree-lined streets. In this case, the home was not only free of objections, it even received a letter of support during the advertising period; a considerable compliment to the home’s designers.

Completed to a tight budget, the home achieved the ‘modern but traditional’ design stipulated by the clients, and abided by the stringent planning control overlays that affect the region. Guy Cole worked closely with the owners to refine the home’s finishes.

Upstairs is a marbled bathroom for the children – as well as a rumpus room – while the parents have an en suite with contrasting glass and Pietra Gregio marble tiles – a stunning feature.

McLauchlan Building Designers specialises in producing designs that suit the specific needs and visions of clients when matched with the unique opportunities presented by specific sites.

Most of the team’s work is around Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and the Mornington Peninsula; however the company has designed homes throughout Victoria and has also completed interstate projects.

Established in 1979 by Robert McLauchlan, the business has won the Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV ) Design of the Year award twice and has also been awarded several category wins for new homes and renovations, in addition to receiving unit development and sustainable design awards from the City of Whitehorse. McLauchlan Building Designers undertakes all aspects of residential design, and is a proponent of the philosophy that multi-residential projects should be as well-resolved as individually designed homes.

Eastside Residential builds two to three boutique homes each year in Melbourne’s prestigious innereastern suburbs. Being a small-scale builder allows Eastside Residential to treat every client as if they are their only client, and to build every home as if it’s their own home.
