The Little Brick Studio Project 1

Designed by The Little Brick Studio and built by Swell Constructions, this contemporary home blends style and functionality with finesse. The clients wanted a tranquil retreat that was shielded from the surrounding homes, and The Little Brick Studio utilised natural materials and clever design to deliver a home that satisfied their wishes.

Set among the gumtrees on a slightly sloping block, the home adroitly harmonises with its bushland environment. Showcasing rammed-earth accents, muted COLORBOND® cladding and an abundance of timber, the façade combines with skilful landscaping to create a seamless connection between the dwelling and its surrounds. A trickling stream that runs the length of the driveway is a charming accent that adds to the property’s organic vibe.

Inside, large double-glazed windows flood the living spaces with natural light, which fosters an airy and inviting atmosphere. Featuring warm oak flooring, vaulted ceilings and a private reading nook, the main bedroom is a luxurious retreat. The en suite includes a rammed-earth feature wall and a freestanding bathtub, which overlooks the stunning Moorooduc Plains.

Large glass stacking doors on the upper level connect to a spotted-gum deck. Featuring an alfresco dining area and an outdoor kitchen, the space offers substantial entertaining potential. A short staircase descends to the lower deck, which features an impressive swimming pool and an adjacent patio.

Due to the abundance of windows that feature throughout the property, energy efficiency was a high priority for the clients. The rammed-earth structures provide excellent thermal mass, while solar panels were installed on the roof to ensure the property is environmentally friendly. Large rainwater tanks cater for both pool and garden maintenance, which minimises mains water usage.

At the 2017 Housing Industry Association (HIA)–CSR Victorian Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards, this project won the Bathroom of the Year category, and received a Judges Commendation in the Custom Built Homes $750,000–$1 million category.
