DPE House Design Studio
This stunning property located in Lysterfield South was expertly completed by DPE House Design Studio. With a strong focus on energy efficiency and creating a healthy built environment, the design of each living space needed to flow seamlessly to the outdoors.
Poised atop a sloping site, the home gradually inclines to accommodate the topography of the land. The split-level design reduced the cut-and-fill required to blend into the environment. The clever design also takes full advantage of the available space on the block, while maximising the views of the lush, picturesque surrounds.
The home’s orientation follows the principles of passive design to reap the benefits of the large north-facing windows, which bestow generous amounts of natural light to the main living area and bedrooms. Each double-glazed window ensures there is plenty of solar gain during the cooler months to keep the homeowners warm.
Good ventilation is a key feature of this home, and a number of innovative devices were incorporated into the design to achieve a healthy indoor environment. A whole-house ventilation system was installed to extract stale air, bring in fresh air, and filter out dust and pollen. The system also acts as a heat recovery unit, which helps to lower energy costs.
Environmentally friendly, low-VOC paint in neutral tones was also used throughout the property. The reduced amount of toxins in the paint means that family members or guests with allergies, asthma or chemical sensitivities can feel completely comfortable in the home.
Installed with energy efficiency in mind, photovoltaic (PV) panels convert energy from the sun to power the home. A gas-boosted hot water system also lowers the homeowners’ use of energy, and provides the family with instant hot water. Energy-efficient appliances are fitted throughout the home to ensure that daily power usage remains low.
A 22,500L water tank provides ample grey water for use within the home, and ensures that the property is both sustainable and cost-effective.
Many of the materials required to build the home were sustainably made, such as the Urbanline composite timber cladding and the Hebel floor and external cladding.
