PL Building Pty Ltd Project 2
AUSTRALIAN COTTAGE CHARM
This renovation project by PL Building stands out through its seamless blend of classic charm and modern efficiency. Located in a natural bush setting in suburban Melbourne, the 1950s clinker brick cottage has been revitalised into a high standard, energy-efficient home with a passive solar design.. With the design by Simone Schenkel of Gruen Eco Design and cabinetry by Touchwood Furniture, the house expertly retains the original cottage’s allure while transforming it into a contemporary home.
The brief emphasised preserving the cottage’s character while incorporating modern, sustainable features. A flexible floor plan was created, accommodating both work-from-home needs and intergenerational living with four spacious bedrooms, three bathrooms and an open-plan kitchen with an induction cooktop. The design maximises natural light and views of the bushland, creating a cottage haven. An earthy colour palette, Australian-made fixtures and natural materials such as Australian timber, spotted gum, charred feature timber and bluestone paving are small touches that enhance the aesthetic appeal.
Challenges were managed through careful coordination and adaptation, resulting in a home that boasts a 7.5-star rating for energy efficiency and improved comfort, retaining cooling in summer and warmth in winter. Built perfectly for Australian weather conditions, the home features quality insulation, double glazed windows and sliding doors and energy efficient ducted reverse cycle heating and cooling throughout.
