PL Building Project 3
PRESERVATION MEETS TRANSFORMATION
The brief for this project was simple; just defy the laws of physics to create a spacious home for a family of five while still preserving a 150-year-old hotel pub in the inner city. This hidden sanctuary in the busy heart of Fitzroy is a striking blend of the old and the new, combining the character-filled exterior of the old pub with a sleek modern building. The meeting and separation of the two has been carefully designed to show off both in the best light, in this case literally. Cleverly positioned light wells create brightly lit spaces that also show off the beautiful old brickwork of the pub.
A strong spirit of trust and a lot of frank discussions went into ensuring the home ticked all the boxes for the family. It was critical to know when to exercise restraint and when to commit to bold design choices like the giant “Sky Garden” lightbox in the kitchen and the upcycled Queensland telegraph poles on the exterior. This rejuvenated oasis now stands ready to welcome family and guests for years to come.
