Mt Martha Design + Drafting Project 11
Kirah Wisbey of Mt Martha Design + Drafting worked alongside Saltvu Builders to create this gorgeous rural-like property inspired by its Balnarring Beach location. What started off as a renovation to a tiny derelict beach shack grew into a larger design brief for a new single-story build. The result fulfills the homeowners’ needs while suiting the site; a compact house that still accommodates an ample number of guests, perfect for a beach house.
The form of the building is made up of two sleek, modern, barn-shaped wings connected by a flat-roofed link. The uniformed lines of the James Hardie vertical profile wall cladding and COLORBOND tray deck roofing, both in dark monument, are contrasted by the textured stone fireplace and softened by the hardwood cladding and decking.
To the front of the house, the picture window stands proudly as one of the hero pieces of the design, both inside and out. Externally, the window is surrounded by an aluminium hooded awning, with its sleek black lines contrasting with the rich timber cladding. Internally, the window is nestled amongst cabinetry, creating a luxurious bench seat that’s bathed in natural light.
Emphasis was placed on the open-plan living areas. Stacking sliding doors provide a seamless transition from the indoor living spaces to the outdoors. Meanwhile, the bedrooms and wet areas are compact and functional, keeping the building’s floor area to a minimum.
