RESTORING HISTORY

McDowell Building & Construction have undoubtedly excelled with this restoration of an 1800’s pub and transformed it into a bright and colourful home. The client’s wanted to keep as much of the original building as possible, so a lot of materials were meticulously removed and either restored or stored for later use. Working alongside 3070 Design Studio, a more contemporary extension was added to the back that features several large steel-framed windows that fill the home with natural light and create an open atmosphere. The extension was built using Solitex Extasana to make it energy efficient and airtight. An additional detached studio was also built on the property and a stunning courtyard combines it with the main residence.

What remained of the existing structure of the pub had to be stripped back so insulation could be installed, and structural issues proved a challenge given the age of the building. The home is full of original features such as the fireplace mantels, hearths, skirtings, some architraves, doors, windows and some original handles and locks. This certainly completes the brief of restoring the structure back to its former glory and giving it a new lease on life.
