In Tasmania’s Huon Valley, this award-winning project by the multi-acclaimed Skookom Building, recognised through the prestigious HIA Awards, sets a new benchmark in sustainable and energy-efficient residential design.

Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of the region’s historic apple-picking sheds, the development delivers self contained, DDA compliant units with an impressive 7.3 star energy efficiency rating. More than just residences, these homes are a blueprint for the future of pre-retirement living in Tasmania, combining practical functionality with architectural sensitivity to place and heritage.

Inside, refined detailing enhances both comfort and performance. Non-penetrating light fixtures preserve thermal integrity, while dimmable lighting provides residents with flexible ambience throughout. The open-plan living and kitchen areas are anchored by burnished concrete slab floors with in-slab heating, softened by timber accents, blackout roller blinds, and sheer curtains, a layered composition of warmth, texture, and functionality.

Central to the project’s energy strategy are Kömmerling’s high performance uPVC window and door systems, fabricated locally by Titane Windows & Doors in Tasmania, engineered in Germany and adapted to Australian conditions. These include entrance and sliding patio doors, plus fixed and operable windows to optimise ventilation, and double glazing with a dark exterior and white interior that blends with diverse design schemes.

The homes boast advanced multi-locking mechanisms for security and peace of mind, outstanding thermal seals to reduce heating and cooling loads year-round, and acoustic insulation that elevates resident comfort in all environments. Manufactured with recycled content and fully recyclable at end of life, Kömmerling profiles are resistant to salt, corrosion, and UV exposure, ensuring decades of low maintenance living with no painting or sanding required.

The project’s architectural integrity and environmental credentials have not gone unnoticed, being shortlisted as a finalist for both the HIA 2025 Tasmanian Townhouse of the Year and the HIA 2025 Townhouse Development of the Year.
