After years of living in draughty, poorly insulated bungalows, the clients were determined to create a home that would prioritise thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and architectural integrity. The answer was clear: a passive home design, complemented by high performing, airtight windows and doors that support year-round comfort.
To bring their vision to life, the homeowners engaged Hocking Constructions, a builder renowned for its attention to detail and understanding of energy-efficient construction. Hocking Constructions collaborated closely with local window fabricator DoubleGlazed.com, who manufactured Kömmerling’s window and door systems tailored to the project’s unique needs.
Every detail of the window and door layout was purposefully designed to enhance performance. North facing glazing and high-level windows allow for optimal winter solar gain, while smart placement throughout the home encourages natural cross-ventilation, maintaining cool interior temperatures during summer. The result is a stable, comfortable indoor climate – achieved with minimal reliance on artificial heating or cooling.
Yet, performance wasn’t the only priority. Style and visual appeal were also front of mind. With Kömmerling’s extensive range of colours, decorative laminates and finishes, the home’s window and door selections were perfectly aligned with its modern architectural character, complementing both the new elements and the heritage features of the original structure.
Despite the complex rooflines and structural challenges, the home achieved an impressive 7.5-star NatHERS rating – a testament to the power of combining intelligent design with premium products and expert craftsmanship.
