Design Unity was approached to design this stunning Western Port Bay home with a dual purpose. Serving as both a weekend getaway and a future retirement property, the clients wanted the house to have a modest carbon footprint and blend into the natural environment. A sense of height became the key element in the design. The elevation exudes visual interest, a sense of drama, and welcomes an abundance of natural light. The striking design solves the family’s pragmatic requirements, and provides them with something unexpected. Comprising spacious living areas with vaulted ceilings, an open-plan kitchen, the house is designed for maximum functionality. Its exterior showcases unique recycled steel features which are highly durable.

The rear outdoor space features a large louvered roof that provides sun protection in summer and light in winter. For continuity, the gum trees on the site add another vertical component, while also providing privacy and a tranquil ambience. Design Unity’s scheme included floor-to-ceiling glazing to enhance the home’s connection to the outdoors. Other key elements in the design include the orientation of the property around a north-facing courtyard, and a blade wall that provides thermal support to the home and includes a fireplace which is ideal for entertaining. This outstanding project won Best Residential Design in the New Houses $300,000–$600,000 construction cost category at the 2018 Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV ) Building Design Awards.
