Designed by the team from Design Unity, Venendo Insieme is a minimalist residence that is full of surprises. “We designed a flat roof to give the house a low profile,” says Warren Jenkins, the managing director of Design Unity. “[The] cantilevered form over the entrance hall makes quite a statement, but when you walk in through the door, the place is open, spacious and filled with light – that is the surprise element [of this home].”

With a passion for architecture, the homeowners wanted their property to blend in with the streetscape and surrounding high-end homes. The site is nestled between neighbouring residences on a long and narrow block, so maintaining privacy was a key consideration.

To create this new home for the family of four, Design Unity included three generous-sized bedrooms and an open-plan living zone. Streamlined in appearance and functionality, the home seamlessly incorporates an abundance of storage space to minimise clutter.

One of the family members has limited vision, so the house was designed across one level, with careful consideration given to the transitions between rooms. There are no stairs inside and the one step at the front entrance is illuminated. The exterior landscaping was also levelled to the house.

Blending effortlessly with the rest of the home, the kitchen is almost completely concealed. The highly functional cooking zone sits behind retractable doors, while the refrigerator, storage cupboards, and kitchen appliances are neatly tucked away in the spacious butler’s pantry. The only work area that remains visible is the central island bench,
which features a convenient sink and elegant tapware.

Utilising a ccomplementary pared-back approach, the bathrooms were designed with close attention paid to detail and fittings. Featuring a large floating vanity unit with a mounted sink and a custom-made mirror, as well as polished plaster walls, the main bathroom exudes opulence.

In recognition of its smart design, Venendo Insieme was considered for the New Houses $500,001–$1 million construction cost and Most Innovative Bathroom Design categories in the 2017 Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV ) Building Design Awards. It won Most Innovative Kitchen Design for that year.
