It draws the eye and can set the tone for the surrounding interior design. The scale, shape and placement of a staircase can impact how light moves through a home, how sound travels and how people interact with the space,” Sun describes.

For builder-range projects, cost tends to weigh more heavily in the decision-making process than aesthetics. In contrast, clients building their dream homes prioritise aesthetics as the most important factor,” Sun explains.

Firstly, you must understand your space and consider the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for – are you seeking a simple, modern staircase or something grand with a royal allure? This is a great way to start narrowing down your decisions and what you want to achieve within the design. With an expert eye, Sun shares that some of the designs that are currently trending include steel central spine stringer staircases, spiral staircases with plastered balustrade and geometric staircases in French Provincial style.

Just like the style itself, your material choices are just as pivotal to the design’s overall success. From steel, metal and glass, each material uniquely influences the form and function of a staircase, and this is where it is essential to lean on your professional for optimal guidance. Sun explains, “metal elements typically contribute a modern aesthetic to a space while timber adds a warm, inviting touch to the home. Personally, I prefer using metal for the structural components and timber for the parts we
interact with, such as the handrail. This combination achieves a balance between contemporary design and tactile warmth.”

Whilst it can be hard to envision the final product from paper, Sun emphasises that the most difficult part is finding a solution that stays true to the original design, while ensuring structural integrity. Hence, he works closely and collaboratively alongside clients to develop practical and reliable solutions, crafting perfection to the last detail.
