Whether you’re renovating or building your dream home, there’s one detail that’s often overlooked. More than just a functional element linking spaces, a staircase plays a key role in the overall interior design. Increasingly, staircases are becoming architectural centrepieces, celebrated for both their striking aesthetic and practical value. Josephine Day from Melbourne Home Design + Living sits down with Vincent Sun, director of Trinity Stairs, to explore how thoughtful stair design can elevate a home’s visual appeal while enhancing its spatial flow, transforming a simple necessity into a true masterpiece.

With a team of passionate designers, engineers and installers, Trinity Stairs brings commercial spaces to life. Its success is built on a foundation of industry experience and a commitment to excellence.

Founded by two engineers with limited carpentry experience, the company embraces an engineering driven mindset to assemble a team of highly skilled carpenters. Today, Trinity Stairs stands as a staircase specialist, serving high-volume builders and homeowners seeking bespoke, architecturally striking designs. Proudly made in Australia, the company has evolved through dedication, meticulous attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to craftsmanship and quality in every project.

STEPS OF GENIUS

When you think of a staircase, you might picture kids running up and down or a quiet path to a midnight snack. But staircases are much more than their practical function– they’re architectural features that shape the character and atmosphere of a home. “A well-designed staircase often becomes the visual anchor of a home, especially in multi-level layouts. It draws the eye and can set the tone for the surrounding interior design. The scale, shape and placement of a staircase can impact how light moves through a home, how sound travels and how people interact with the space,” Sun describes.

From the initial consultation to final installation, Sun and his team work closely with clients to understand their lifestyle, preferences and vision. Every staircase is proudly Australian made, designed and built to meet Australian standards and building regulations, ensuring it is not only beautiful but also structurally sound and enduring.

With so many elements involved from materials, space and functionality, you may be feeling puzzled about where to begin. However, speaking with a professional and having sources of inspiration in mind are a great starting point. “It really depends on the type of customer we’re working with. For builder-range projects, cost tends to weigh more heavily in the decision-making process than aesthetics. In contrast, clients building their dream homes prioritise aesthetics as the most important factor,” Sun explains.

FROM PAPER TO PERFECTION

From intricate drawings to exact measurements, bringing a design concept to life undoubtedly has its challenges.

If you’re at the beginning of your staircase design journey or are simply looking for some inspiration, Sun provides some insightful tips to get you started. Firstly, you must understand your space and consider the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for – are you seeking a simple, modern staircase or something grand with a royal allure? This is a great way to start narrowing down your decisions and what you want to achieve within the design. With an expert eye, Sun shares that some of the designs that are currently trending include steel central spine stringer staircases, spiral staircases with plastered balustrade and geometric staircases in French Provincial style.

Just like the style itself, your material choices are just as pivotal to the design’s overall success. From steel, metal and glass, each material uniquely influences the form and function of a staircase, and this is where it is essential to lean on your professional for optimal guidance. Sun explains, “metal elements typically contribute a modern aesthetic to a space while timber adds a warm, inviting touch to the home. Personally, I prefer using metal for the structural components and timber for the parts we
interact with, such as the handrail. This combination achieves a balance between contemporary design and tactile warmth.”

Whilst it can be hard to envision the final product from paper, Sun emphasises that the most difficult part is finding a solution that stays true to the original design, while ensuring structural integrity. Hence, he works closely and collaboratively alongside clients to develop practical and reliable solutions, crafting perfection to the last detail.

AN EYE FOR EXCELLENCE

Like anything, it is the small details that make the most difference and have a lasting impact. Staircases are the perfect element to add a touch of luxury and glamour, elevating the atmosphere of your home, mesmerising guests as soon as they enter. “I believe that small, refined details – like a shadow line on the risers or wall capping – can significantly enhance the staircases appearance without adding much to the overall cost,” says Sun.

A defining feature in your home, Sun finds that younger generations are favouring designs that blend classical elegance with modern simplicity, adding a timeless allure to the overall space. With that said, designs are always evolving, and Sun is excited to see what the future holds. “Trends are constantly evolving, but classics never go out of style. Certain aesthetic preferences endure across generations, which is why classic elements remain timeless. In our staircase designs, we always incorporate these classic features – thoughtfully adapted to complement modern simplicity.”

As you look to create your dream home, Sun exclaims that staircases are a must-have feature that is only growing in popularity for builders, designers and homeowners alike. “In modern home design, people are increasingly seeking more personalised features. As one of the most prominent elements in a home, staircases are becoming more sophisticated in both design and installation. While adapting to this trend poses significant challenges, it also opens up exciting new opportunities for everyone in the industry.”
