Seeking a laid-back lifestyle on the Mornington Peninsula, the owners of this coastal abode settled on site in a small cul-de-sac in Western Port Bay. With family living in mind, the collaborative design process between the clients and Thomas Anderson Design evolved organically.

The modern courtyard-centred design features two wings, one which houses the main bedroom suite and three additional bedrooms, while the other comprises a highly functional open-plan kitchen and generous living zones. Serviced by a spacious butler’s pantry and multiple family meals areas, the kitchen looks out onto the undercover alfresco and sitting room. A central north-oriented decked courtyard featuring a pool and lounge arbour area provides the clients with the ideal place to entertain throughout the year.

The clients’ design brief was to create an indoor/outdoor living space that could be easily adapted to the changing seasons, and would be sympathetic to its beautiful rural surrounds.

Showcasing a contemporary style that nods toward the humble farmhouse, the home features rustic barn-inspired front doors and timber-lined cathedral ceilings in the kitchen. The elegant timber floorboards and natural stone fireplaces add to the earthy ambience of the interiors.

Obtaining a high energy-efficiency rating was a top priority for the clients. To achieve this, Thomas Anderson Design installed double-glazed windows throughout and additional wall and ceiling insulation. A 5kW back-to-grid solar panel system and a 15,000L water-harvesting system were also fitted to reduce utility costs.
