CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS

ENERGY-SAVING SOLUTIONS FOR THE MODERN HOME

For this project, Derbyshire was asked to design and construct a house that felt like the Queenscliff Fisherman’s Cottage with a more contemporary edge to be in keeping with modern designs.

To comply with the clients’ brief, the Hitchcock Avenue property was designed with ample space to give the owners room for outdoor and indoor entertaining. In addition, the clients wanted to make the home as energy-efficient as possible. This was achieved through high thermal mass materials, such as the beautiful polished concrete floor, which heats the home in winter, and through the north-facing, double-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows and doors.

The property is orientated so that the majority of windows face north, allowing the exposure of south winds and the hot western sun to be minimised. These clever tricks have earned Derbyshire and the property a 7-star energy rating.

CSR linear boards were used on the front fac?ade of the house in order to achieve a traditional weatherboard look, while the rear is clad in horizontal Zinc Alum with painted timber windows. The timber pontoon at the front entrance and natural landscaping all add to the nautical feel of this house.

With windows flanking both sides of the home plus a cathedral ceiling vaulted over the kitchen, the home feels large and spacious – deceptive, given that it is only 18 squares.

Comprising three bedrooms, two living areas, a study, a main bathroom, and an ensuite in the main bedroom, the home has been created with comfortable family living in mind.

A smaller living area allows for more intimate get-togethers, while the open-plan living area can be used for more casual entertaining. The gas log fire in the larger living area adds a cosy touch for those cold winter days. Glass doors in the main bathroom allow it to open up onto a decking area complete with an outdoor shower that allows sand from the beach to be washed off before entering the house. Granite benchtops used throughout add a touch of class, as do the feature pendant lights over the island bench.

Owned and operated by the Derbyshire family for 25 years, the company offers design and build services to clients in the Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast regions. As specialists in contemporary right through to heritage homes, Derbyshire uses the latest sustainable materials and premium finishes to provide a high-quality result. The company has won numerous awards, including the HIA Home of the Year award for Western Victoria. It is also one of the few builders accredited with the prestigious Master Builders Green Living certificate, developing homes with 6–9 star ratings, as well as specialising in carbon neutral homes.
