Project 1

With an exciting brief to create his clients’ dream home, Shane Thomas of Thomas Anderson Design created the spectacular resort-style residence pictured here. The large block on the Mornington Peninsula boasts an excellent north-west aspect, with 180-degree bay views from Portsea to the Melbourne skyline. The gently-sloping site is elevated above the road, providing an opportunity for a magnificent entry.

Naturally, the clients were keen to capitalise on their amazing site, and engaged Thomas Anderson Design to create their vision of a well-zoned home that maximised the solar aspect, took advantage of the exceptional views and was utterly luxurious. It needed to cater for indoor and outdoor entertaining – necessitating access from the ground-floor north-facing pool to be accessible to the living rooms and serviced bar – and had to be tailored to the clients’ lifestyle.

The owner has a timber products business and owns timber mills; thus timber forms an integral part of the fabric of the home. External feature cladding, ceiling lining, detailing, the garage front doors, the superbly crafted staircase, kitchen cupboards and flooring all feature beautiful timber and give the home warm, comfortable appeal. From the sweeping landscaped driveway to the porte-cochere connected to the front entry, right through to the smallest detail, the attention and care poured into the design of the home is evident.

The ground-floor is zoned with its own fully serviced guest room for the comfort of frequently visiting overseas and interstate guests, and has the luxury of its own games and theatre room with a full bar. The guest suite and games room both overlook the infinity pool courtyard and offer stunning views over the bay.

A study/office is located on the entry level, which has internal access to the enormous three-car garage and workshop, as well as various storage rooms. The upper-level is accessed via the staircase or the lift, and every first-floor room offers beautiful vistas. The upper-level is also home to the sumptuous main bedroom, which has access to its own private deck and additionally boasts a spacious dressing room and crisp modern ensuite. The kitchen, meals and main family room are combined in one huge area and have access to the expansive deck and outdoor alfresco living area, which overlooks the magnificent bay and is the perfect vantage for experiencing the sunset. The remaining two bedrooms at this level each have an ensuite and dressing room.

The kitchen houses state-of-the-art European appliances and features timber-faced cabinetry with stone benchtops. The butler’s pantry with its separate sink provides a space for preparation and negates the need to clutter the main kitchen benches.

Mark Woodland and his staff at AG W Homes were commissioned to build the home, which has been finished to the highest standard inside and out, much to the delight of the clients. The home’s design and construction exhibit superb quality that befits the spectacular coastal site and maximises the area’s natural beauty and stunning views.
