ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

MASTERWORK LIVEABILITY MEETS SUSTAINABILITY

Solar Solutions Design’s latest project epitomises energy-efficient design without compromising on style. director darren evans is passionate about sustainability and committed to delivering environmentally friendly solutions to the mainstream community. solar solutions design has always been at the forefront of delivering modern, energy- efficient homes, and the company’s newest, custom-designed residence in lysterfield is no exception.

Solar Solutions Design designed the home with a focus on adaptability and low-maintenance materials, which ensures the occupants will enjoy a relaxed and stress-free lifestyle in the home for many years to come.

Combining functionality with modern aesthetics, the two-storey property exemplifies energy-efficient design, with an emphasis on reflecting and respecting the natural surrounds and site conditions. the earthy colour palette and natural building materials selected for the home complement the surrounding bushland and combine to create an unobtrusive design that blends harmoniously into the landscape.

The home is situated on a sloping site, and has been cleverly designed to integrate seamlessly into the inclination of the land. the home is split-level, which reduces the need for cut and fill, and allows the house to naturally assimilate into the site. the split-level design also takes full advantage of the available space on the block, and maximises the views of the lush, picturesque surroundings.

The home’s orientation follows the principles of passive design. the main living areas and bedrooms face north to reap the benefits of the sun and wind, while areas that are not typically used during the daytime face south. generously sized, low-emissivity glass windows flood the home with natural light and ensure there is plenty of solar gain during the cooler months.

Good ventilation is a key feature of this property, and a number of devices have been incorporated into the home’s design to achieve a healthy indoor environment. the home is equipped with a state-of-the-art whole-house ventilation system, which filters out dust and pollen while bringing in fresh air. the ventilation system also acts as a heat- recovery unit, and helps to reduce energy costs. ceiling fans are installed throughout the property to circulate fresh air, while casement windows deliver maximum cross-flow.

Environmentally friendly, low-voc paint in largely neutral tones has been used throughout the property. the reduced toxins in low-voc paint means that family members or guests with allergies, asthma or chemical sensitivities can still get maximum enjoyment from the home.

Water conservation is a key consideration in the design. the inclusion of an instantaneous gas-boosted solar hot water system and a 22,500l water tank ensures the property is both sustainable and cost-effective.

The residence perfectly represents the solar solutions design ethos of sustainability and liveability. solar solutions design created a custom-designed home that faultlessly integrates the indoor and outdoor areas while making a positive impact on the environment. the home is at once extremely functional, comfortable and sustainable.

AWARD-WINNING ENERGY-EFFICIENT DESIGNERS

Solar Solutions Design’s newest home epitomises energy-efficient design without compromising style. It is Solar Solutions Design’s approach to design and customer satisfaction that earned the company recognition at the 2011 Victorian HIA/CSR housing awards.

Director Darren Evans was awarded Residential Building Designer for 2011, an award that he was accredited with for the third time in five years. This award highlights his commitment to clients and success through energy-efficient sustainable design. Solar Solutions Design was also honoured with the Best New Residential Building of 351m²– 450m² at the Building Designer’s Association of New South Wales (BDA NSW) 2011 awards for this stunning home.

Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley, this secluded 3.2 acre property boasts captivating views and is surrounded by an abundance of native vegetation, making it the ideal blank canvas. Designed by Darren Evans of Solar Solutions Design, the home suits the site and fulfilled the client’s brief, producing a spectacular, cleverly zoned and light-filled home providing year-round comfort. With its impressive 6-star energy rating it surpassed the client’s expectations and is ready to be a leading example of the possibilities of 6-star requirements.

The harmonious home exemplifies energy-efficient design with an emphasis on reflecting and respecting the natural surrounds and site conditions. The colours and materials selected for the home complement the surrounding area, resulting in an unobtrusive design that flows seamlessly into the landscape.

The overall comfort of the home has been achieved through careful design, the integration of solar passive design principles and the selection of high quality materials and finishes. A CSR Hebel Powerpanel wall system was selected as the home’s cladding for its superior acoustic insulation, thermal properties and flexibility of the final finished result. Rendering the panels created an individual exterior with a flexible colour palette. The main neutral render tone juxtaposed with the darker feature sections adds excitement and contrast to the façade; retaining the interest of all who view it.

Timber and natural stone claddings were selected to further enhance the elevations, lending visual strength. The naturally occurring colour variations in the timber and sandstone add warmth and character to the exterior no matter the time of year, blending the unique façade beautifully with its environment.

The continuation of these materials internally unites the exterior and interior, enhancing the harmonious, natural-feeling design. Furthermore the use of thermally improved timber double-glazed windows captures the surrounding views while providing high energy efficiency. These windows coupled with an elliptical louvre shading system lift the comfort level of the home through summer protection and deep winter sun penetration, providing ample natural light internally.

The bright, light-filled internal spaces were made possible through articulation of all façades with the additional benefit of increasing the field of view, capturing all the Yarra Valley has to offer. This articulation created courtyard areas that are all concealed from the entry, enhancing privacy and increasing northern exposure. Furthermore the location of the courtyards assists cross flow ventilation, allowing prevailing winds to naturally cool the home.

Harnessing the natural thermal benefits of the sun and maintaining it throughout the home was a vital requirement in the client’s brief. A specialised heat recovery ventilation system was installed, which circulates air throughout the home, maintaining a constant comfortable temperature from the light-filled northern spaces to the less exposed southern rooms. In addition to this, it replaces stale internal air with fresh outdoor air, creating a user-defined humidity level for comfortable living all year round, while only using the equivalent power of a 60-watt light bulb.
