With this project, Nagy Design show why they’re specialists in modern home design.

Their clients, a newly married couple and their six children, wanted a space for the family to spend time together and create new memories, that also allowed each family member to escape and have their solitude.

The original 1980s home was tired, aesthetically outdated, and in desperate need of a renovation. Nagy Designs came up with a modernised floor plan that is open, light filled, and promotes interaction while maintaining privacy.

Located in Torquay, the house has amazing scenery that the client wanted to make the most of. An open-plan kitchen, dining and living area forms the hub of the new home and takes full advantage of the site's panoramic water views. The living space has also been extended to include a billiard room, creating plenty of space for the entire family to gather and spend time together, without getting in each other’s way.

The parents have their own retreat, which is masterfully isolated, with access through the kitchen and living area disguised as cupboard doors. The master bedroom has controlled light penetration and provides another layer of privacy with a light void and a private deck. A stunning ensuite and spacious walk-in robe are the finishing touches to a perfect bedroom retreat.

Downstairs, a separate kitchen and living space provide a children’s zone. Also designed with an open plan layout, the kids can spread out and do their own thing, while still spending time together. This section leads outside, increasing the living space they have to enjoy.

The new home features expanded outdoor living zones that the whole family can enjoy. The upstairs and downstairs deck areas are linked via a sleek staircase that greatly increases the usability of the space. The revived outdoor dining area overlooks a new swimming pool, echoing the upstairs water views and revitalising the backyard.

Clean lines and muted natural tones characterise the external facade, a far cry from the brick eyesore and curved roof of the original residence. The way in which the second storey is staggered and the addition of timber articulation adds a three dimensional quality, while hiding the curved roof and banishing what was once a flat facade.

The new design has skillfully balanced the intricacies of family life, combining family time with personal space.
