Our designer, Millissa Vitali, says home buyers come to Comdain for light, open homes with high quality design, construction and finishes from a builder they can trust.

People come to us because we can design for any block. At Toorak Road we have created an east facing courtyard, ideal for brunch, while on the western side you can enjoy summer evenings around the pool.

Millissa has created a stylish, highly practical hub for the house with a butler’s pantry connected to the laundry, with both also connecting to the kitchen which conceals them from view. “I wanted a very stylish kitchen and to make life as easy and relaxed as possible – using the connected spaces you can double your workspace to cater for larger groups, while hiding all the mess.”

The 43 square contemporary double storey home, designed for the typical 15.23 metre (50 ft) wide inner Melbourne block, has four bedrooms with three living areas and includes a ground level guest suite. The home is light, airy and expansive with several grand spaces and a variety of places to hide away and relax. Based around American oak cabinetry and stairs, the interior palette includes polished concrete-style porcelain tiling and ‘Raw Concrete’ Caesarstone benchtops.

The living area ceiling pops up to a lofty 3.6 metres with a trio of full height windows looking onto the pool and the central staircase is set against a double height window wall designed to draw light through the centre of the house.

The home also highlights Comdain’s ability to suffuse its homes with natural light, whatever a site’s orientation. At Toorak Road a southern rear orientation is turned to advantage with three outdoor living areas creating choice and interest.

The entire project was designed, specified and documented by their highly professional staff. Like any quality custom designed home, it was a continuous design and refinement process throughout the project. The project involved the development of the entire site and in due course, the nomination of clear demarcation lines between the building, landscape and tennis court.

The floor plan is extremely functional providing serviceable separation between informal, formal and sleeping zones of the home. The internal design is highlighted by the floating Makore timber staircase and complementary sky bridge connecting the master bedroom.

Externally, the client’s desires were interpreted to be a home of style and balance encapsulating the key architectural elements of Frank Lloyd Wright. External living is provided by the substantial balconies and alfresco areas. A key component of the delivery was the project management required for the co-ordination of the landscape and tennis court construction.

comd3Like all Comdain Homes’ custom designs, this property in Balwyn is extremely efficient by design. The home has achieved in excess of the required five star rating and has an acute focus on long term sustainability with the installation of five 5000L underground water tanks and commissioning of home automation through the installation of C-Bus controlled lighting. Being a technology savvy family, the home is fitted with industry leading AV distribution, structured cabling, CCTV/intercom and automation based alarm panel.

Being a family based company is closely linked to their success. Comdain Construction was established by Jim Coen in 1962 with Comdain Homes evolving in 1987 to cater to the needs of residential home buyers. Today Jim’s five sons are also involved in the management of the company enabling the business to continue their responsive, hands-on approach.

A brief was given by the clients to design and build two premium dwellings on a beautifully located and oriented block in Surrey Hills. The team worked with the owners from the beginning of the project, from design and documentation and extensive Planning Permit approval through to the construction of the project. The clients were two families, one a successful retired couple, the other a busy, younger family. Both clients had varying briefs, reflecting their lifestyle and their stages of life but Comdain Homes were successfully able to find a common thread to tie the two properties together and make them complementary.

Managing the design and construction of two homes demanded incredible workmanship. With two sets of clients, each requiring individual fl oor plans, the Comdain Homes team exhibited outstanding project management skills in project delivery.

The homes are contemporary with the detailed external fi nishes of Alucobond metal cladding, solid render and stackstone. The quality continues internally with exquisite coastal Blackbutt timber floors, semi-commercial windows, two pack cabinetry, flood-lit cabinetry recesses and operational butler’s pantries.
