Building your very own dream home will be one of the most exciting things you do in your lifetime, which is why careful consideration should be given to every detail. Your roof completes the look of your home, so it’s incredibly important to put some extra thought into it. Bojana Lazarevska caught up with Lorene Roberts, managing director of Nulok Roofing Systems, to find out exactly what you should look out for when it comes to the roof over your head.

Roof materials have come a long way over the last decade, with the advent of new technologies allowing them to last longer and withstand harsher environmental conditions.
Lorene elaborates on what we can expect for the future of roofing.

What roofing trends do you predict will be popular in 2017?

“The inclusion of solar panels that look amazing [when] seamlessly integrated into the roof is the big trend about to hit the building industry. Glancing at a roof, you will not see the panels – one would say they are nearly invisible – but on closer inspection, you will be asking what it is you are looking at.

“There is no raised ‘toaster rack system’ type of infrastructure that deteriorates the look of your home. Instead, you will [increase] the value of your home, as well as its appeal.

“Nulok Roofing Systems is keeping up with the technology and works with a cutting-edge solar installation company, so you can be assured [you’re] getting the best quality system for your exact needs.”

Which roofing materials work best for what purpose?

“Homes, [just like their] owners, are completely unique – they all have different needs, functions and looks. It is a combination of what [the] homeowners wants and needs that makes a roof perfect for [their] home.

“If you want a roof that looks amazing and is a showstopper as well as practical, then Nulok Roofing Systems is [for you]!”

What are some of the different looks that can be achieved?

“Nulok [Roofing Systems roofs] can look extraordinarily different when used on different projects. Old Victorian homes look amazing with Welsh slates… include a couple of rows of scallops and the classic home oozes oldworld charm.

“Modern clean lines suit the minimalist-style homes, where hips, valleys and ridges don’t want to be emphasised and featured. Ecological designers and homeowners love the integrated solar panels [that] can be used in conjunction with every type of style or design.

“Vibrant coloured tiles have been used in Nulok Roofing Systems, as wall cladding produces a spectacular result, which is great for the architectural, angular-designed buildings!”

What colours and designs do you predict will be or will remain popular in 2017?

“Charcoal [was] the look of 2016 and I think it’s here to stay for a while. Other trends are just a flash in the pan, but charcoal is the colour of choice for younger generations coming through.”

Are there any rules homeowners should follow when it comes to choosing their roofing?

“Oh yes, definitely, especially when it comes to slate!

“Slate roofing has been around for many, many years and is, without doubt, one of the best roofing products still available. But it has had its problem over the years, mainly due to the quality of the slate and the old traditional fixing method.

“Not all [types of] slate that roofers use [are] good quality. Sole slate roofs show brown streaks running down the roof – this is rust and we all know that rust causes holes. Unfortunately, these roofs will or may develop holes all over the roof in just a few short years.”

How does Nulok Roofing Systems differ to other types of roofs?

“The innovative patented system is vastly different to other type of roofing on the market.

A Nulok Roofing Systems roof takes much less time to complete, yet is exceptionally strong and can be walked on as soon as the tiles are fitted.

“Nulok Roofing Systems uses a traditional product – slate – and installs it using a modern, new and improved method. You [have] the look of the old with the benefits of the 21st century.”
